The Thonet Project
Brass spinning, Nickel-plated, W370 X D370 X H15
Six chairs with broken seats created an opportunity for six designers to rethink new seat solutions. Fixing the chairs became a design exercise.
The underlaying concept was that there were thousands of Thonet bentwoods being out of use and the ongoing dialogue about the re-use of consumer goods through an explorative design approach appealed to the group.
The Mirror seat is a nickel-plated brass spinning, sitting in the void of an old Thonet chair No. 20. It maximises the sculptural presence of the chair’s bentwood structure whilst simultaneously projecting the contemporary on to this familiar old form. When not in use the seat becomes a sculptural element of its environment and when sat upon it’s just a nice chair!
